Best Practice
Medicine and evangelism are fundamentally connected. The Gospel message is imparted quite naturally through medicine. Physical and spiritual needs impact the whole person including body, mind, emotions and spirit. The very practice of medicine is an opportunity to live out the Gospel message. Love, mercy, compassion, sacrifice and healing are all aspects of Christ's work and are demonstrated through a medical evangelism outreach. The medical care lasts for only a short time but the acceptance of Jesus Christ lasts for eternity. With careful planning, flexibility, humility and a servant's heart, the medical team members can move as the Spirit of God moves, providing mercy, healing, compassionate care and effective communication of the Word of God. Many medical professionals become frustrated when they are unable to provide all the modern medical interventions. It is important to design Christian medical outreaches in such a way that the medicine serves the Gospel and not visa versa.
As representatives of Christ to the world, it is imperative that the medical professionals work within the scope of best practice and know their limitations! Medications/supplies must be of the highest standard. What is done in a short-term medical evangelism outreach reflects directly on the host missionary either positively or negatively.
